In this intensive course, students study English (reading, writing, speaking, listening) while learning about international and intercultural communication. The topics covered in this course include learning about different cultures, diversity in society, communication styles, and non-verbal communication

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
In this intensive course, students study English (reading, writing, speaking, listening) while learning about international and intercultural communication. The topics covered in this course include learning about different cultures, diversity in society, communication styles, and non-verbal communication.
This course requires daily homework (please see below). Student perfomance is evaluated based on attendance, participation, two quizzes and a final reflection paper (see below for more information)

Students will learn effective English communication (especially speaking and listening) techniques for working in culturally diverse work environments.

Some lecture using presentation software is done to provide background and to stimulate thinking and discussion.
We will do lots of pair work, active learning, and group discussion in class. Students should do the readings before coming to class each day.

Culture and Values
Learn about our cultural values and differences with others. Pair/Group work.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students should have completed the readings before class (approximately 5-10 pages per day). Unfamiliar vocabulary should be checked and learned. This will take 1-2 hours of preparation.

Short Quizzes: 30%
Reflection Paper: (800 to 900 words):40%

Some difficult English vocabulary and grammar is translated and explained in Japanese.

The course reflection paper is due on November 12, and should be submitted to the instructor as an e-mail file attachment, or sent by post to the 通信教育部, Ichigaya campus in Tokyo.
In the event of a coronavirus outbreak, the course will be held online in real time using Zoom.
