Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Our modern economy has developed through technological innovation and the invention of new products. At the same time, however, monopolistic market for a new product has caused various problems due to supressing competition. It is widely recognized among policymakers and economists that competition is inevitable for a good market and that appropriate rules are necessary to maintain competition. In these circumstances, the United States, a leader in the modern economy, has long been groped for suitable rules of competition that its prosperity and innovation would be based on since the late of 19th century. Furthermore, the history of the U.S. antitrust laws surprisingly coinsides with the history of the U.S. entertainment industry. This course provides an overview of the U.S. antitrust laws, introduces legal cases concerning the U.S. film makers, and examines market competition in the entertainment industry.

【Learning objectives】
Understand what a good quality of market is and what are suitable rules to maintain market quality from past legal cases. Acquire methods to analyze and examine market mechanisms and competition in the entertainment industry from the perspective of history, law, and economics.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content and complete the required assignments after each class meeting.

【Grading Criteria/Policy】
Final grade will be decided based on homework (40%), final exam (40%), and in class contribution (20%).
