Outline (in English)

The purpose of this lecture is to study the characteristics and development of poetry in modern and contemporary Japanese literature, based on reading of poetry works of DAIGAKU HORIGUCHI.

Daigaku Horiguchi was born in Japan in the middle of the Meiji era and later became known as a translator. His full-fledged literary career began in the field of poetry during his youth.

He was first involved in the writing of tanka. In the Meiji era, Hiroshi Yosano became one of the masters of one of the classic poetry styles of Japan, waka, which was updated to a modern style of tanka. Daigaku was also under the influence of Hiroshi’s wife Akiko Yosano.

His father, a foreign diplomat, gave him the opportunity to live abroad intermittently, unusual for Japanese at the time. Living in the Japanese Embassy and the Japanese Embassy's residence, he acquired French, the official language of diplomacy at the time. In two different languages, French and Japanese, the world of his poetry extends to tanka and the creation of unconventional free poems. Translations of verses and prose, mainly in French literature, fueled his attempt to expand the world of literature.

Modern Japanese poetry has evolved between a style based on the characteristics of the Japanese language and the content and style of foreign poetry formed by different styles in different languages. His translation works had a new impact on modern Japanese poetry.

We learn the development of poetry in modern and contemporary literature in Japan, and at the same time, from various perspectives, consider how the poetry works are written, published in magazines and other media, and the collection of poetry is eventually created.
