Outline (in English)
This class aims at developing students’ basic knowledge of accurately constructing English sentences leading to writing paragraphs and essays in which students develop the foundations of academic writing. Attention will be paid to not merely translating to English, but to developing the awareness and skill of writing in a more English-like way, finding and researching good topics, and content-based writing. Classes are leveled and enrollment held to approximately 20 students in order to maximize teaching effectiveness.

本授業は、英文をセンテンスレベルで正確に組み立てるための基本的な知識や、自分の意見や考えをまとめてパラグラフを書く基礎力を身につけ、エッセイ・ライティング、アカデミック・ライティングを視野に入れた力へと発展させることを目的とする。伝えたいテーマについて調査し、その結果をパラグラフ構成に則って効果的に書く経験を通して、学生に達成感と自信を与える。授業は習熟度別で少人数で行う。

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
•Write for a clear purpose and to a specific audience, using appropriate word and style choices
•Choose, restrict, organize, and support a writing topic and/or thesis
•Understand the planning, outlining and drafting process
•Write sentences that are clear, concise, and effective, using academic essay structure and paragraphing
•Integrate sources accurate and effectively
•Write in the style of an English-language academic essay and be aware of MLA formatting.
•Read and edit their own and their peers’ essays in order to improve them

Each class will review key points in that week’s topic using short reading and writing tasks, along with pair- and groupwork designed for Active Learning, this will include project-based work. Feedback will be delivered in-class. Students will be asked to consider how these tasks relate to the topic at large, and the essay type being focused on. Homework will be assigned which relates to the incremental steps of each week and also to the main assessment tasks of the course.

*Please note that all work submitted to the teacher must only be in (Microsoft Word) .docx format: not PDF, Google Docs or anything else.*
If this course is run in an online format, it will use Zoom and the Hosei University Hoppi system. *For simplicity, all messages, announcements, homework and assignments will be posted in the “Announcements” section of the course site.* Students will also be instructed to regularly visit the “Forums” section in order to communicate with other students, give and receive support etc.
Students will need an email address which they can check regularly in order to communicate with the teacher. This address must not change during the semester.
*Please make sure that the electronic equipment which you use for the course is working: excuses for missed deadlines or missing homework related to electronic device troubles will not be accepted.*
