Outline (in English)
The course is designed to help students develop skills that enable them to communicate effectively in writing. Students will practice writing through assignments that ask them to plan, draft, revise and edit their essays over time.
By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) write for a clear purpose and to a specific audience, using appropriate word and style choices, 2) understand the planning, outlining and drafting process, 3) integrate sources accurately and effectively, 4) write in the style of an English-language academic essay, 5) read and edit their own and their peers’ essays in order to improve them.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Final grade will be decided based on class participation (20%), writing assignments (30%), research project (50%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業は、英文をセンテンスレベルで正確に組み立てるための基本的な知識や、自分の意見や考えをまとめてパラグラフを書く基礎力を身につけ、エッセイ・ライティング、アカデミック・ライティングを視野に入れた力へと発展させることを目的とする。伝えたいテーマについて調査し、その結果をパラグラフ構成に則って効果的に書く経験を通して、学生に達成感と自信を与える。授業は習熟度別で少人数で行う。

・明確な目的があり特定の読者に向けて、適切な語彙やスタイルで書くことができる。
・論理構成や段落分けを理解し簡潔で効果的な文章で書くことができる。
・書くプロセス（planning, outlining, drafting）に沿って書けるようになる。
・剽窃(plagiarism)を避けるために様々な引用の仕方を理解し使えるようになる。
・自分のエッセイやクラスメートのエッセイを読み直し、編集できるようになる。

・授業計画に従い、グループワークやディスカッションを盛り込み、参加型の授業を実施する。具体的には、ライティングの演習問題や科学・技術英語の英作文を、グループワークで実施し、クラス内で発表し相互理解を深める。ピア編集を活用し、お互いの書いたものを校正、編集し、ライティングスキルの向上につなげる。また、教員とone-on-oneで実施する個別フィードバックがある。
・課題・テスト等の提出やフィードバックは「学習支援システム」を通じて行う予定である。

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
【本授業の準備・復習等の授業時間外学習は、4時間程度を標準とする】
・小テストは指定された教科書の基本英文を中心に出題されるので、教科書、ワークシート等の該当部分の問題は各回の授業までに解いておくこと。分からない単語については、辞書を引き意味を確認すること。
・３種類のライティング課題は、全て、初稿提出⇒ピア編集⇒書き直し⇒最終稿提出で進んでいくので、期限までに初稿、最終稿を提出すること。
・リサーチプロジェクトは、テーマに沿って、様々なリーディング素材を英語で読みながらまとめていくので、しっかりと事前準備をして進めていくこと。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
・リサーチプロジェクト ５０％ （リサーチペーパー３０％、発表２０％）
・小論文 ３０％ （最初の小論文１０％、２回目の小論文２０％）
・小テスト、ピア編集、ピアフィードバック等を含む、クラス内課題取り組み状況 ２０％
※上記の評価に加え、欠席１回につき２％減、遅刻１回につき１％減とする。
※交通機関の乱れによる遅刻については、遅延証明がある場合は考慮する。
※正当な理由なく5回もしくはそれ以上欠席した場合、評価の対象としない。
