Outline (in English)
1【授業の概要（Course outline）】 Students of this course will effectively learn certain skills required as academic writing (paragraph writing in this case), focusing on such as paraphrasing or summarizing, using the high beginner/pre-intermediate level textbook for students in science and engineering major.
2【到達目標（Learning Objectives）】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. To know how to describe matters and express their opinions,
2. To build up an adequate paragraph of certain, selected topics,
all on their own academic surroundings.
3【授業時間外の学習（Learning activities outside of classroom）】
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content and/or handle with assignments.
4【成績評価の方法と基準（Grading Criteria /Policies）】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 50%、unit assignments : 30%、in class contribution: 20%
(At least 60％ of all is required for grading.)

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業では、英語を外国語として学習する理工系学生のための中級用ライティング演習教材を使って、アカデミック・ライティング（あるいはパラグラフ・ライティング）に必須のパラフレーズや要約などの諸技能に主眼を置き、それらの技能を効果的に習得していくことを目的とする。
到達目標Goal
この授業では、パラグラフ・ライティングはアカデミック・ライティングには必要不可欠であるとの基本認識のもとに、パラグラフの構成（形式）面での必須事項を踏まえつつ、各Unitの扱う特定テーマについてパラフレーズや要約などの技能を訓練しながら、実際にパラグラフ・ライティングを書く能力の向上を図ることを目標とする。
この授業を履修することで学部等のディプロマポリシーに示されたどの能力を習得することができるか（該当授業科目と学位授与方針に明示された学習成果との関連）Which item of the diploma policy will be obtained by taking this class?

使用するテキスト各unitの前半では、アメリカの架空の大学の理工系教授・学生たちによる特定の話題の対話（Dialog）についてDictationを行い、Writing Tips（但しunit 1-6）を学習してから、後半のパラグラフ・ライティングの演習に進む、という構成である。授業時間数の制約上、unitにつき基本的に2回、前半部分を選択的に行い、後半部分を中心に（下記「課題」も含めて）実施していくことになる。
毎回の授業は基本的に学生の挙手・応答によって進められる。この挙手・応答の結果は平常点に換算される。
なお、期間中、使用テキストから各unit少なくとも1回の課題が出される。課題については、提出期限後おそからず、全体に対する記述例の提示や確認のためのやり取りを行うことによってフィードバックする。この課題の実施・提出状況は平常点として算定される。

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
本授業の準備・復習・宿題等の授業時間外学習は、4時間を標準とする。準備学習等によっても不明な個所はなるべく放置せず、必要に応じて質問に来て解決すること。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
授業平常点50％（課題実施・提出状況30％、挙手応答20％）と学期末試験50％で、全体の60％以上の取得者に単位を認定する。
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
オンライン授業のみであったが、良好な学習状況であった。とはいえ、コロナ下のオンライン授業では、学生自身の頑張りや達成感に比してのフィードバックの不足感が学生の戸惑いを助長するものと感じた。
