Outline and objectives

This course is to study the global society and international social issues with Japanese views. The global issues include discussion on migration, ethnicity, gender, nationalism, citizenship, human rights, and so on. The course is to analyze the structure of problems in the globalizing society. Students are required to study global problems of International Society and Japan with references, to submit comment sheets each week, to write short papers, and to take a term-end examination.
※This course is held every other year. It is the same course as "International Society(「国際社会論」Or Kokusai-shakai-ron)" at the Faculty of Social Sciences for 2022. The languages used in the class will be English and Japanese for 2022.

Goal

By the end of this course, students are expected to be able to analyze and to discuss the global social issues with Japanese views.

◉This course is to study the international issues on globalization and Japan. The issues are various and those include migration, ethnicity, refugees, gender, nationality, citizenship, historical injustice, human rights, human security, civil society, and so on. When we discuss the issues, it should be with historical perspectives and theoretical approaches. Also, it is crucial to include the Japanese views since we should see them as "our issues."

◉This course will be conducted as a face-to-face lecture on Tama Campus. Attendance in the classroom is required each week.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are required to study before/after a class each week. It is required to study to prepare for presentations and discussion in the class, to submit short papers and to take a term-end examination. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.

Textbooks

Textbooks are not assigned as various materials will be used for each topic.

References

References will be introduced in the class.

Grading criteria

Grading will be according to (1) Term-end examination (60%), (2) Short reports (20%), and (3) In-class contribution (20%).

Equipment student needs to prepare

◉This course will be a face-to-face lecture on Tama campus for 2022.
◉Yet, group discussion and presentation might be conducted by on-line (Zoom, etc.) when it is necessary by COVID-19 situation. Students should be able to use PC and Wi-Fi for on-line (such as Zoom) discussion/presentation for some mid-term occasion.
◉Information and notice will be announced by Hosei University system, Hoppii. And students should submit the assignments and short papers through the Hoppii system.
