Outline (in English)

1.Course outline
The goal of this course is to help students write several patterns of short and logical paragraphs based on English writing rules. Therefore, this course will place emphasis on learning rules needed to write paragraphs in English and reviewing grammar which students have studied so far through reading passages written in accordance with the rules and doing exercises in English composition.

2.Learning objectives
In this course, students are expected to achieve the followings:

(a) Absorbing grammatical knowledge which students have studied until high school by reviewing and becoming able to write each sentence with clarity utilizing the knowledge.
(b) Acquiring vocabulary words in various fields which are included in the textbook.
(c) After understanding basic rules of writing an essay such as Paragraph Writing, becoming able to compose a variety of paragraph styles based on the rules.

3.Learning activities outside of classroom
Preparatory study and review time for this course are 2 hours each.

(a) Preparation
Students are expected to read the passages of Reading 1 and 2 in each unit of the textbook looking up words and idioms that they do not know in the dictionary and figure out the contents of the passages. In addition, they need to solve practice problems in the textbook reading through the explanation of grammar and rules of writing which is included in each unit.

(b) Review and Submitting writing assignments
Students are required to review the contents of that day's class; for example, comprehending the meaning of a sentence which is structurally complicated, grammar, and rules of writing as preparatory study for a quiz in each unit. Furthermore, an assignment of writing a paragraph will be given to students in each unit, so they must complete and submit it.

4.Grading Criteria /Policy
Students will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Writing assignments: 50%
Usual performance score (e.g., attitude in class, preparation for classes, other homework): 40%
Quizzes: 10%
