Outline (in English)

Understanding and thinking of the natural environment is a key to improve our social sustainability. We conduct various studies on (1) the natural environment itself, and (2) the relationship between the natural environment and human society, with emphasis on natural disasters. The approaches are mainly based on physical geography. We examine the impact of the natural environment on human society and sustainability of human society.
Students should be able to do the followings by the end of the course: (1) to explain the natural environment from the perspective of spatial variation, mechanism, and history, (2) to explain the relationship between the natural environment and human society with emphasis on natural disasters, (3) to conduct survey and presentation, and (4) to use maps. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on criteria including in-class contribution and reports (100%).
