Outline (in English)

Natural phenomena that cause disasters have occurred repeatedly, and will also occur in the future. We have to improve our approaches in all aspects for building resilient and sustainable society. We examine sciences of natural disasters caused by earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruption, heavy rain, and slope failures, and then discuss land use, social infrastructures, use of disaster information, evacuation, hazard map, and education, for reducing natural-disaster risk.
Students should be able to do the followings by the end of the course: (1) to explain what determine the risk of natural disasters, and (2) to explain efforts to mitigate natural-disaster risk from the perspective of the natural environment and human society. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on short reports (40%) and the final report (60%).
