Outline (in English)
Students will listen to illustrated lecture (presentation) on selected topics that illustrate the social and cultural context of popular music development in the 20th century. Lessons will also include readings and discussion of the topics.

To familiarize the students with, and enable them to discuss the development and social history of modern western popular music.
到達目標Goal
To expand students’ English competence through listening to and discussing the various genres of music that contributed to the development of popular music in the 20th and 21st century. Students will listen to original recordings and read about the political and social issues that are addressed by the various genres.

Lessons are topic-based. Each week students will share experiences and opinions about a topic introduced by the teacher by weekly worksheets, with feedback from the teacher on student answers. Questions will be both direct or discussion-based. Feedback on assignments submitted by students will be provided both in meetings and through the Learning Management System.
In the case of online classes, worksheets will be uploaded weekly to Hoppii and classes will be conducted over Skype.
Please note that the teaching approach may vary according to which threat level we are at. The details will be announced through the Learning Management System.

While meeting time time will focus on discussion and listening, students are expected to extend their research of the topic by further listening and reading out of class, particularly following up topics of interest identified during discussions.

参考書References
Additional resources will be provided with each lesson, and students can access most of the musical examples from YouTube or Wikipedia.

2 x quiz: (2 x 50%T): mid-term and end-of-term quizzes.
