Outline (in English)

This course is designed for students who want to learn the actual situation and problems of community development with cultural activities in Japan. We are going to focus especially on municipal cultural policies, including tourism promotion, landscape conservation, and revitalization of central urban area. At the same time, however, it is possible to deepen your understanding of governmental cultural policies, with which municipalities have to build a mutually complementary relationship in order to realize these policies. Each of the cities or towns familiar to students is an important subject for our study. The main objective of this course is to extend the whole knowledge of cultural policies through concrete examples enough to discuss with each other and consider together the community development with arts and culture in the 21th century. Sometimes field research in Tokyo will be conducted.
