Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
The theme of this course is "development and ethnic groups" focusing on the concepts, the ethic groups in development in Southeast Asia and the history of the ethnicity issues in Japan. The course aims to discuss and analyze development from the perspectives of ethnic groups.

【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1) Understanding and explaining the controversy over the concept of ethnic group, race, ethnic minorities, tribe and the indigenous people.
2) Express her/his opinion critically on the social/historical/interactive relations between development issues and ethnic groups.
3) Applying the cases of development in Southeast Asia and in Japan for 1) and 2) above.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the assigned literature. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
【Grading Criteria / Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
1) Extent of understanding about the assigned literature including the presentation based on your reading: 60%
2) Short reports on your own research: 20%
3) In class contribution: 20%
