Outline (in English)

[Course Outline]
This seminar is an introduction to the multiple facets of French culture, history, and society. Open to students with little or no previous instruction in French, this seminar will enable students to attain a basic understanding of Mainland France and its terroirs.

[Learning Objectives]
1) By taking this course, students, including those who have not necessarily studied modern Europe in a specialized way, will acquire the knowledge necessary to conduct independent research at the graduate level.
2) Textbook readings will provide students with a basic knowledge of French history and culture.
3) Students will watch video clips in class to help them relate historical knowledge from the textbook readings to contemporary political, social, and cultural topics in Europe.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
(a) Read the textbook assigned each session.
(b) Post a link and a text for your topic in the classroom on the designated LMS (Learning Support System - Hoppii or Google Classroom) before each session.
(c) The study time required for preparation and review for this course will be the time required to do (a) and (b) above. Since this course is taken by students with different levels of proficiency in Japanese and other languages, a uniform length of time will not be indicated. However, according to the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, the preparation and review time for a two-credit lecture or seminar should be at least four hours per session.

(a) Topics presented by students - 55%
(b) Active participation in discussions - 30%.
(c) Other contributions (e.g., cooperation in class management) - 15%.
