Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to review the Japanese features of International Studies in institutionalization in Japanese Universities after WWII and to understand of its academic discipline. After WWII, Tokyo University inaugurated “kokusai kankei ron” as a system of education and research of international relations introducing Anglo-American International Relations (IR) with a kind of acculturation. “Kokusai kankei ron” came to prevail in postwar Japan and have its specific feature in the method. This class explore the development of the International Studies originated from colonial studies in the variety of approaches. It will lead to understanding of transformation of traditional disciplines into “International so and so.”
【Learning Objectives】
Students will be able to:
①Comprehend the Japanese features of International Studies in institutionalization in Japanese Universities after WWII and its academic discipline.
②Understand key concepts, theory, and thought of International Studies.
③Comprehend International Studies based on students’ research field and topics.
【Methods】
①Students are expected to read assigned readings and related material to be able to engage in active discussion prior to the class. Presenter should upload resume or Power Point of summary and discussion topics of assigned reading via Hoppii until 4-hour before the class. Other students should prepare for comments and questions.
②Students are expected to discuss the topics based on students’ research field and subject.
③Each student should submit presentation feedback or essay via Hoppii when they are required.
④Schedule is subject to change depending on present situation both at home and abroad related the objects of the class or students’ interests and understanding.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Based on the 【Methods】, the standard time required for preparatory study and review for this course are 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Participation and contribution:30%; Presentation :30 %; Essay and feedback:40%
Students are required to take more than 60% score in total to pass.
