Outline (in English)

This course will introduce students to understand colonial society consisting of diverse cultural backgrounds under colonial system of international relations. As we focus on Okinawa, students will seek to understand this region through themes include global process of colonization and decolonization, nationalism and identity, militarization as neocolonialism reflecting the complex nature of contemporary global issues. Students will be also familiar with International Studies and Regional Studies.
【Learning Objectives】
Students will be able to:
①Understand “region” as an actor to develop and change international relations.
②Analyze the issues of colonial societies in the evolution of international relations with understanding of relevant concepts, theories, and thought.
③Critically analyze information and documents pertaining to Okinawa, setting them in historical context and in interdisciplinary perspective.
【Methods】
①Students are expected to read assigned readings and related material to be able to engage in active discussion prior to the class. Presenter should upload resume or Power Point of summary and discussion topics of assigned reading via Hoppii until 4-hour before the class. Other students should prepare for comments and questions.
②Students are expected to discuss the topics based on students’ research field and subject.
③Each student should submit presentation feedback or essay via Hoppii when they are required.
④Schedule is subject to change depending on present situation both at home and abroad related Okinawa or students’ interests and understanding.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Based on the 【Methods】, the standard time required for preparatory study and review for this course are 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Participation and contribution:30%; Presentation :30 %; Essay and feedback:40%
Students are required to take more than 60% score in total to pass.
