Outline (in English)

Course outline:
This course is designed to enhance students’ understanding of the representation of pregnancy and childbirth in utopian and dystopian worlds. Students will explore the possibilities of pregnant women/men's bodies as they are depicted in various genres such as literature, film, art, and subculture. In addition, they will learn how ideologies relative to pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare are socially constructed and reproduced. Moreover, they will learn to analyze the "ustopic" worlds created within contemporary literature and culture.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1) Understand the role of utopia/dystopia in literary and cultural studies.
2) Analyze representations of the body in a wide range of media.
3) Understand the historical and social context in relation to pregnancy and childbirth, and critically examine gender norms.
Learning activities outside of the classroom:
Students are required to read the reference material by the next session (one to three hours for every session). They are also expected to be prepared to deliver presentations in class.
Grading Criteria /Policy:
The final grade will be decided based on the following:
Involvement during discussion and presentation: 60%
Final essay: 40%
