Outline (in English)

【Course outline】 The aim of this course is to provide students with discipline of International Studies to understand international society.
Through the 20th century, the classical view of the international society with nation states as actors did not reflect realities any longer. We will review how the transformation of international relations has affected the study of them. Students will also examine our daily life and domestic issue are part of international society by synthesize national and international situations on equal terms. Finally, we will analyze the events and issues to resolve the problems in contemporary world.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of this course, students are expected to:
(1)Recognize major concepts and theoretical frameworks of international relations in historical context.
(2)Understand the discipline of International Study with
a) the perspectives of “interrelatedness” in the political, economic, social, and cultural spheres,
b)interdisciplinary approach by knowing how different disciplines interrelate one another,
c)historical approach with “diachronic” and “synchronic” views.
(3)Formulate own and common topics in class. Students should be able to:
a)analyze research data and previous studies,
b)interpret research results,
c)have presentation and discussion to develop own research,
d)improve skills of communication and academic writing.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
(1)Each class will commence by 15-minute presentation and 15-minute discussion of the news article. Presenters should choose one article and analyze it critically.
(2)Presenters of each class will be expected to write resume based on the readings assigned for the class. The presentations will be prepared for deep understanding of the readings and further discussion using other non-assigned sources for their comments. Other students will also be expected to understand of the readings and prepare for comments and questions.
(3)Pre-class and post-class assignment task are expected to take approximately 2 hours each to complete.
【Grading Criteria/Policy】
This course will be evaluated through in class contribution based on attendance, preparation of readings, presentation, participation in discussion, group research, etc.(50%), and assignment papers (50%).
