Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to help the students to acquire basic academic skills and have better understanding of modern Japanese literature and thoughts. This class focuses on how these are related with Western counterparts. The participants are expected to discuss modern Japanese culture in their own words at the end of the course.
 
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant text. Required study time is at least two hours. In addition, after each class, students will be expected to spend reviewing the class content at least two hours to fully understand it.

Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end paper: 60%, In-class contribution: 40%
