Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
Through this course, students will be introduced to basic concepts and theories in order to understand various cultures, mainly those in the United States. Students are expected to develop an interest in the issues of ideology, power, everyday meaning-making and cultural practices. This course will explore different territories within the realm : popular culture and media studies, minority and subcultures, race, gender,etc. In addition, students will be learning and trying out various methods to find information, give presentations, write papers, cite sources, etc.
【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
I. In this course, students will develop the following skills:
(1) The ability to find problems worthy of consideration from a single subject.
(2) The ability to investigate, interpret and examine the reasons for the above problems and communicate them to others.
(3) The ability to listen to the opinions of others, possibly revising their own views, and refine them into a more accurate, precise, and persuasive conclusion.
【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
It is essential for students to prepare in advance for the following week (reading, watching, listening, and researching the subject matter(s)) in order to participate in the class. This course will require students to complete about two hours of pre- and post-course study for each class.
【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
The following four aspects are the main targets of evaluation,which will be judged comprehensively.
(1) Personal presentation (30%)
(2) Completion of assignments such as essay plans and comment sheets for each session (30%) 
(3) Seminar essay (30%)
(4) Contributions to each class (10%)
The above four aspects will be the main targets of evaluation and will be judged comprehensively.
