Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
From the aspect of teaching Japanese to non-native learners, students can deepen their thinking about the formation of knowledge about the Japanese language, the differences between Japanese and other languages such as the native language of the learners, and grammar and vocabulary for communication, as well as learn about the pragmatic functions of the Japanese language through the theory of "politeness".
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
(1) To distinguish between the actual state of language and the linguistic knowledge possessed by native speakers in general (an objective view of the Japanese language).
(2) To learn how to extract linguistic events from linguistic materials.
(3) To learn how to understand the Japanese language from a broad and relative perspective.
(4) To think about what kinds of misuse are harmful to the other person's feelings, and whether there are other things besides misuse, such as speech style, that can affect the other person's feelings.
(5) There are many variations of language depending on the user, the situation of use, and the occasion, and language itself changes from moment to moment. Students will deepen their thinking on this issue.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to be sure to access the assignments that are mentioned in each case, and try to develop your own areas to handle. The contents will be the subject of question-and-answer sessions and discussions, if necessary.
Your required study time is at least four hours for each class meeting.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
