Outline (in English)
【授業の概要（Course Outline）】
Towards the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. to study the history of the English language, which, good or bad, has become an 'international language' in our modern world; and
2. to develop a general interest in the language itself through doing a lot of reading.
【到達目標（Learning Objectives）】
The following are the concrete goals of this course:
1. To get a general idea how the English language has evolved,
2. To try to explain various apparent 'mysteries' of English in historical terms,
3. To begin to develop a general theory of linguistic change,
4. To study English in its general sense.
【授業時間外の学習（Learning Activities Outside of Classroom）】
Students are expected to visit the relevant LMS site and get as much information as needed.
Admittedly, this is not an easy course with all those unfamiliar terms and concepts. So, it is strongly recommended to read the relevant materials suggested on the LMS site posted immediately after each class session by the instructor.Approximately two hours of preparation and reviewing are necessary for this course.
【成績評価の方法と基準（Grading Criteria /Policy）】
- Please note that attendance is taken for granted. However, if you miss a class, the following rule is applied: 1 demerit for each class missed. 3 demerits = -10% on your grade (roughly one letter grade). 5 demerits = failure for the course.
- The Final exam scheduled on the day of the final class session is very important, literally determining your grade. Please see my message on the LMS site for more information.
Any modification to the above shall be known to you by using LMS
Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
英語の歴史は，ゲルマンの民族がブリテン島に侵入してから始まります．本授業では，担当者とともに，学生は，本来は大陸のゲルマンの部族の言語であった言語がブリテン島に入り英語になってから，どのような変化を遂げて，21世紀の今のような国際的な言語となっていったか学んでいきます．
到達目標Goal
１．学生が英語の歴史について，ひと通りの知識を得ること．
２．学生が英語の歴史に興味を持ち，現代英語の様々な事象について，歴史的な説明を試みること．
３．学生が言語の歴史研究について，その大まかな方法論を知ること．
４．学生が英語の運用力をつけること．
この授業を履修することで学部等のディプロマポリシーに示されたどの能力を習得することができるか（該当授業科目と学位授与方針に明示された学習成果との関連）Which item of the diploma policy will be obtained by taking this class?

この授業は原則としてオンラインで行う。詳細は学習支援システムで伝達する。
本授業では，テキストを読みながら，演習方式で英語の歴史について学んでいきます．履修者は，必ずテキストを読んできてください．授業では，教材の内容について皆さんに担当教員が質問したり，付加的な情報を加えたりして，履修者の参考になるべく努めます．その後，復習をして固めれば，理解力が高まります．
課題等のフィードバックについては，「学習支援システム」や，個人メール等により行います．

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
学生は，まず，テキストを読んでくることから始めてください．この際，批判的に読むこと（書かれていることに疑問はないか，曖昧な記述はないか等問題意識を持って読むこと），出てくる用語等を資料，ネット等を用いて調べること，を意識的に行うことが重要です．授業後，復習をして固めれば，理解力が高まります．重要なのは，授業において，何らかの「引っ掛かり」を覚え，それを後で自分なりに調べるなどの行為を通じて，定着させていくことです．本授業の準備学習・復習時間は各２時間を標準とします。
テキスト（教科書）Textbooks
英文パイルズ『英語の歴史』 (1973). この本はずいぶん古い本ですが，英語で読めるものとしては，それなりにいい本であると思います．元来，米国の高校生向けの教科書であるため，発音表記が分かりにくかったり，最近の英語についての説明がなかったりするのは欠点ですが，ModEまでの説明はとてもよくまとまっています．
参考書References
授業中，随時指定しますが，とりあえず日本語で読めるものとして以下のものを挙げておきます．
・北村達三 (1980). 『英語を学ぶ人のための英語史』．東京：桐原書店．（内容として一番標準的ですが，最近の英語についての記述が少々足りません．）
・寺沢盾 (2008). 『英語の歴史 過去から未来への物語』．東京：中央公論新社[中公新書]．
・中尾俊夫，寺島廸子 (1988). 『図説 英語史入門』．東京：大修館書店．
・ブラッドリ，H.寺澤芳男訳 (1982). 『英語発達小史』．東京：岩波書店[岩波文庫]．
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
試験での成績を第一条件にして，平常点を加味します．言うまでもないことですが，出席することはすべての前提です．欠席は基本的に認めません．（やむを得ない場合に限り，欠席3で-10%（大体のところ評価にして１段階下がる），5で失格，というのを一応の目安とします．）
基本的に，最終試験で評価をいたします．その他のプロジェクト等を課す際には事前に周知します．）
この成績評価の方法をもとに，本授業の到達目標の60%以上を達成した者を合格とします．

学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
パソコンはあると便利ですし，発音記号のフォント，樹形図の書き方等に慣れることが可能になります．さらに，いろいろ興味深いサイトもありますので，授業や「授業支援システム」等を通じて，幅広く勉強ができます．
その他の重要事項Others
１．具体的なことは履修者の数，知識のレベルなどを加味して決めます．
２．本科目はグローバル・オープン科目のHistory of Englishと内容が同一ですので，重複履修はできません．
３．今年度はテキストを読んでいくことを中心にした授業構成に変えました．
４．「英語史」と「英国史」とは異なります．ことばに焦点を当てる授業です．
５．初回授業に必ず参加してください．
カリキュラム上の位置づけ
本科目は，言語文化コースの3,4年次以上対象の授業です．（科目の性質上，SA英語圏の履修者が多いことが予想されます．）英語の歴史をひと通り駆け足で学び，言語文化演習（あるいは卒業研究）へ結びつける科目です．半期のため，かなり駆け足で勉強することになりますが，英語の歴史の基本的な知識は網羅できると思います．履修者は，自分なりに興味があるトピックを見つけ，方法論についても自分なりに知ろうとすることが大切です．
