Outline (in English)

This course is designed to enhance students’ understanding of contemporary society through literature. In this class, we will learn about literature that transcends national borders and is not limited to one country, one language, or one culture. While reading various authors and their works, we will consider the world in Japanese literature and Japanese literature in the world. In particular, we will consider the position of Japanese literature in world literature from three perspectives: 1) Japanese literature on the move, 2) the earthquake in literature, and 3) the COVID-19 pandemic in literature.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
a) Have basic knowledge about contemporary Japanese literature.
b) Analyze texts of Japanese literature.
c) Understand the relationship between literature and society.
Learning activities outside of the classroom:
Students are required to submit three essays and to read the reference material by the next session (one to three hours for every session).
Grading criteria/Policy:
The final grade will be decided based on the following:
Involvement during discussion and presentation: 10%
Short essay (1): 25%
Short essay (2): 25%
Short essay (3): 40%
