Outline (in English)

We often hear that Japanese manga is quite popular in foreign countries. In fact, there are many young people who learn Japanese to enjoy Japanese anime and manga in their original language. However, do we really know the actual situation overseas? First of all, what is "Manga" in Japan?
This course provides an overview of manga from a theoretical, historical, and social points of view, giving clues for rethinking the manga that has been considered to be self-evident.
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
- have a basic knowledge on the history of manga.
- understand that manga is not an obvious concept, and explain it from a social perspective.
- point out the mechanism of expression of manga, which we usually read unconsciously.
You may be asked to read the assigned works as a preparatory activity and answer the questions orally in class. You may also be asked to submit assignments.
Term-end examination: 60%、Short reports: 30%、in-class ramarks: 10% .
The evaluation criterion will be whether or not the student has acquired the perspective of relativizing own culture and the means of reading manga consciously. Based on this grading method, students who have achieved at least 60% of the achievement goals of this class will be considered to have passed the class.
