Outline (in English)

[Course Outline]
In the era of globalization, English is one of the dominant tools of intercultural communication among people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. What does such a communication look like? The aim of this course is to reconsider 'English' from the perspective of World Englishes and English as a lingua franca. Through this course, you will have the opportunity to understand features of varieties of English particularly in Asian countries as well as features of intercultural communication in English as a lingua franca settings. On the basis of the knowledge you acquired, you will then reconsider the role of English in the globalized world and English communication ability necessary for surviving in such a world.

[Learning Objectives]
1. Students can understand and summarize characteristic features of varieties of English (phonological and grammatical features, etc.).
2. They can understand and summarize how people from multilingual backgrounds communicate with one another in English as a lingua franca.
3. They can understand and explain the problematic nature of standard language ideology and native-speakerism.
