Outline (in English)

This course introduces the basic concepts and theories ofnation, ethnicity and nationalism from the perspective of cultural anthropology. We will examine the theoritical perspectives with abundant empirical studies from Asia-Pacific regions, including Japan. ​At the end of the course, students are expected to understand how nation is defined and how people use this concept for nation-building, economic development and welfare policy. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on term-end report (40%) and in class contribution (60%).
