Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
There are two objectives of this course taught by four instructors from FIC's four subfields of intercultural studies*:

A. You should become acquainted with the basic ideas and concepts which are necessary for intercultural studies.


B. You should begin to develop a framework of learning cultures other than your own, on the basis of which you can start to conduct your own research.

(*FIC's four subfields, in case you don't know:
(1) Informatics, Artefacts and Transculturality (IAT)
(2) Culture and Representation (C&R)
(3) Language and Culture (L&C)
(4) International Society and Culture (ISC))

【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
We have the following subfield-based objectives:

(1) Re: IAT, you should:
- become acquainted with generation, editing, and restructuring of our information, together with its transmission and human involvement.
- be able to understand the quality of information obtained in cyberspace and to develop a framework thereby you can think and experience.

(2) Re: C&R, you should:
- be able to acquire a wider framework thereby you see the relationship various creative activities and various media.
- begin to develop a rudimentary framework to discuss those activities.
- be able to understand that this subfield is not simply an assemblage of knowledge about various art.
- be able to consider what lies between creative activities and our daily life, as well as how they interact with our society.

(3) Re: L&C, you should:
- familiarise yourself with general methodology of language and culture learning with special focus on the English language.
- be able to understand how to get necessary information by using reference books, the internet, etc.
- be able to understand how this subfield interfaces with other three subfields.

(4) Re: ISC, you should:
- be able to learn basic methodology of considering various nation- or group-based relations from various intercultural perspectives.
- be able to understand the importance of contents rather than mere linguistic fluency (although any attitude of facilitating communication is, of course, recommendable.)
- be able to develop a framework thereby you can reasonably see various international problems, making the most of the knowledge hitherto acquired.

【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
You should prepare for the class sessions according to the instructions given by instructors. Also, revising/reviewing is highly recommended for consolidating your learning. Minimum of 2 hours of study is required for each class session.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Each subfields has an equal 1/4 say (25%) for your final grades. Students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for this course.
