Outline (in English)

In this course we'll learn to employ basic methods in Economics to analyze several subjects on education, with a special focus on topics that are familiar to everyone, such as the role of education and its impact on society and the individual. Why did you decide to enter the University? Why does the government fund the management of schools with taxes? What would happen if education became free for everyone? Economics provides a set of tools for answering to these and many other related questions in a logical way, so let's learn about them.

Learning Objectives:
There are two main goals of this lecture. The first is to deepen the capability to consider various issues related to school education and university education, and to gain an opportunity to reconsider one's own university life. The other is to acquire an economic way of looking at and analyzing things, and to acquire the ability to logically consider not only education but also a wide range of social issues.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
The following preparation and review may be required.
・Find articles and other materials related to the issues discussed in the lecture, summarize the author's arguments, and write a report in which you express your own thoughts.
・Submit reports summarizing your own opinions and answers to the exercises related to the lecture content.
・There is a possibility that you will make a presentation of the above in the lecture.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

Grading criteria:
Usual performance points: about 45% (mid-term report, answers to exercises and reaction papers in the lecture. Active participation such as opinions in lectures.)
Final report: about 55%.
