Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
While there are many studies in sociology that use discourse and textual data, the methodologies/theories they rely on range from constructivist and Foucauldian discourse analysis to text mining using natural language processing. In this context, the novelty of the findings as well as the validity of the analytical procedures and the ontological and epistemological assumptions about the discourse/society relationship are sometimes severely questioned.
This course aims to provide students with a basic perspective on the different methodological positions and assumptions that are required for the study of discourse. We will deepen our understanding by reading and discussing the basic literature, and partly by using work.
No prior experience in discourse research is required.

【Learning Objectives】
The goals of this course are as follows:
- To understand the several methodological positions involved in the sociological analysis of discourse.
- To understand the assumptions and issues involved in each method.
- To understand how to conduct a basic level of sociological quantitative text analysis using KH coder.
