Outline (in English)

Course outline:
This course introduces the classification of microscopic structures of crystals by spatial symmetry such as translation, rotation, and inversion. The course will focus on the optical characteristics of anisotropic materials and the behavior of light in them in view of the spatial symmetry.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the classification of crystal systems, Bravais lattices, crystallographic point groups, etc., and the characteristics of the dielectric tensors derived from the classification. In addition, we will focus on the propagation of light in matter to learn about the birefringence phenomenon and its application.
Learning activities outside of classroom:
Students will be expected to study more than four hours for a class. Make sure to have most of the basic mathematical skills related to trigonometric functions, exponential functions, solid figures, vectors, complex numbers, calculus, etc. Clearly understand the transformation of equations and derivation of formulas in lecture materials.
Grading Criteria /Policy:
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on term-end examination(80%) and short reports(20%).
