Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This course studies Japanese economy in terms of business cycles and medium- to long-term structural changes. Basic notions of macroeconomics, economic statistics and some empirical methodologies useful to analyzing Japanese economy are also introduced to students taking this course.

(Learning Objectives)
The objective of this course is to understand basic mechanism of business cycles and price developments (inflation) in Japan’s economy. We particularly focus on business cycles after the Global Financial Crisis on 2008. Structural changes that influence Japan’s potential growth are also our scope. Throughout the course, some empirical methodologies such as where to obtain Japanese economic statistics (GDP, unemployment, balance of payment, etc.) and how to use them effectively for charts or tables are also explained.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant reading assignments such as Bank of Japan’s Outlook Reports and understood the content.

(Grading Criteria /Policies)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following.
Term-end examination: 50%, Short reports: 50%. Active discussions are encouraged and counted as additional scores.
