Outline (in English)

(Course outline)A composite material is made from two or more constituent materials, and has characteristics that are superior to the individual materials. In this course, the student will learn the composition of these materials, molding methods, and the physical properties of fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs) widely used in the recent years, such as the polymer matrix composite, the metal matrix composite, and the ceramic matrix composite. Moreover, he/she will understand how the strength of a single material is developed and applied to a composite material. At the end of the course, the student is expected to describe the fundamental theories of elasticity, mixture, and breakage rules, and anisotropy and lamination theory of the composite material.
(Learning Objectives)The goals of this course are as follows:
(1) Obtain basic knowledge of types of composite materials as well as their manufacturing processes. (2) Understand the fundamental theories of elasticity, stress, strain and deformation, mixtures rules of composite materials.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)A composite material or a composite is made from two or more constituent materials. Therefore, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the properties of individual materials.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)The student’s overall grade in class will be based on the following:
- Short reports: 10%
- Term-end examination: 90%
This course will be taught in Japanese.
