Outline (in English)

This course deals with macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the mechanical behavior of metals, ceramics, and polymers and emphasizes recent developments in materials science and fracture mechanics. The content of this course is divided into two sections. Section one is devoted to a study of the deformation of solid. Here, emphasis is placed on the role of microstructure, crystallography, and dislocations in explaining material behavior. Section two deals with the application of fracture mechanics principles to the subject of the fracture in solids.
By the end of the course, students should be able to know the followings:
-the various types of the fracture and the causes.
-the fracture mechanisms of materials based on the microstructure points.
-the causes of the fracture and the precautions against then.
-the relation between the fracture and cracks.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading will be decided based on short reports: 20% and term-end examination: 80%.
