Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Welding, Joining and Casting are key fabrication technology contributing a basic industry of Japan (so-called “Monozukuri”). This course is to help students acquire an understanding of the fundamental principles of these technologies to understand appropriate engineering preventing failure and fracture.

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of the course, students should be expected to 1~6.
1.Students would learn role of welding, joining and casting technology for manufacturing.
2.Students would acquire basic theory of welding, joining and casting technology.
3.Students would learn history of large-scale structure, structural detail, manufacturing technologies and case study of accidents.
4.Students would have basic knowledge of steel (Carbon steel, High strength steel, heat resistant steel, cryogenic steel and stainless steel) which can be applying for practical engineering.
5.Students would learn basic method of design, functional assessments, fracture mechanism, fatigue strength and corrosion mechanism.
6.Students would learn basic of quality control using non-destructive inspection.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting because of the lecture will be executed using many technical terms.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process Mid-term report (40%), term-end examination (30%), and in-class contribution (30%).
