Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course provides important topics concerning fundamentals of fluid mechanics. The topics covered in this course are divided into three parts, characteristics of fluids such as viscosity and compressibility which strongly influence motions of fluids, fundamentals of fluid statics including concept of pressure, pressure variation in static fluid and buoyancy, and fundamentals of fluid dynamics. In the third part, students will work to formulate mass conservation (Continuity equation) and momentum conservation (Euler’s equation of motion) which is the application of Newton’s second low to moving fluids without viscosity, and the well-known Bernoulli equation which explains energy conservation.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
- To understand viscosity and compressibility of fluids, and to be able to explain the difference between flows in which these properties can be ignored and in which they cannot.
- To understand the relationship between the pressure acting on a stationary fluid and the force acting on the surface due to the pressure.
- To understand the continuity equation, Euler's equation of motion, and Bernoulli's theorem, which are the basis of fluid motion, and to be able to solve engineering problems by applying them.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 4 hours to understand the course content.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Students who achieve a total of 60% or more will pass the course.
