Outline (in English)

The subject matter in this course is mean to provide prospective engineers with sufficient background and understanding of a physical behavior of industrial materials.
This course deals with atomic bonding, crystal structures, the internal structure of materials, both perfect and imperfect. It also treats kinetic problems of diffusion, phase transformations, and structure control. The study of solid and the relationship between structure and physical properties is an important component of modern engineering education.
By the end of the course, students should be able to know the followings:
-the relation between the inter-atomic force and physical property of materials.
-the state of crystallization by X-ray diffraction.
-several types of structure defects and these roles in metallic materials.
-the relation between an phase-equilibrium state and thermodynamics.
-the self-diffusion in the solid.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading will be decided based on short reports: 20% and term-end examination: 80%.
