Outline (in English)
This course is designed to nurture well-educated global citizens who can accurately understand various situations surrounding the world today and also grasp the society and culture of their own countries from an objective and multifaceted viewpoint.
The main focus of this class is to improve students’ reading speed and accuracy through phrase reading and oral reading / shadowing practice. Shadowing is a language learning technique in which you listen to a model and repeat what you hear with as little delay as possible. The main benefits of this training are 1) improved speech perception, 2) fluency in pronunciation and speech, and 3) enhanced speed and accuracy in reading comprehension.
This course will cover a wide range of significant issues confronting the world today. It expects students to gain an increased critical understanding of them in order to become responsible global citizens.
・Students will learn to read and listen efficiently.
・Students will develop critical reading and thinking skills.
・Students will acquire knowledge and skills to become autonomous learners of English.
Students are required to practice phrase reading and shadowing at least for 60 minutes a week outside of class.
Grading Criteria: Final Exam (50%) + Presentation (20%) + Assignments (20 %) + Participation (10%)

世界を取り巻く様々な状況を英語で正確に理解して、それを批判的に読み解き、その上で自国の社会や文化についても客観的、多面的な視点で捉えることのできる教養豊かな国際人を養成する。
到達目標Goal
ニュース英語を正確に読み取る力、聴き取る力を養う。そのために英文を意味のかたまりごとに読み(チャンク・リーディング),ある一定の速度で安定的に読む訓練を行う。音声に合わせて聞き読みをしたり,音読やシャドーイングの練習も行う。基本文法や語彙の補強も行い、確実に読解力、リスニング力のレベルアップを図る。また、ニュース記事について自分の意見を平易な英語で書くことも到達目標の1つである。

授業は教科書を中心に進める。教科書はVOA(Voice of America) Learning English という英語学習者向けのニュース(通常より3割程度遅いスピードの放送)からなる。これを聞いたり、読んだり、発話練習を行いながら、記事の内容を正確に理解した上で、自分の意見を伝える練習も行う。使用するCALL(コンピュータ支援の語学学習)教室の特性を活かして、様々な学習ツール(グループワーク機能、音声&文字チャット、音声録音など)を利用しながらクラスメートと共に効率よく学習する。提出課題に対しては、個別またはクラス全体のフィードバックを行う。

本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて60分程度を標準とする。
・教科書の予習や英文のチャンク分け、シャドーイング練習を続けることによって,自律的な学習習慣を身につける。
・ペア・ワークやグループ・ワークを頻繁に行う参加型の授業なので、予習を怠ると授業に参加できないばかりか、他の受講生にも迷惑がかかる。準備学習は授業参加の必須条件である。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
期末試験(筆記)50%+発表20%+提出課題20%+平常点10%によって評価する。成績評価は100点満点とし、60点以上を合格点とする。
欠席が4回以上になった場合は単位修得の資格を失う(ただし、忌引きや登校停止を必要とする流行性疾患は除く)。遅刻・早退3回で欠席1回の扱いとする。授業開始後30分以上の遅刻、および授業終了30分以前の退出は欠席とみなす。

少人数ではあったが、熱意のある学生が多かった。自らに課題を課して学習する自律的な姿勢が見受けられた。

初回授業から学内ネットワークを利用するので、受講生はIDとパスワードを確認しておくこと。
その他の重要事項Others
コンピュータを利用して授業を行うが、機器類の使い方については授業時に詳しく説明するので、パソコン操作が苦手な学生でも問題なく受講できる。
