Outline (in English)

This course is designed to help students develop their reading skills through reading essays on a wide range of issues in the world today and thinking critically about them. Students will also improve their listening skills through listening to short talks and conversations on a variety of related topics.

The goals are to develop the abilities to understand and summarize the essays accurately, grasp the main points of spoken materials, read aloud effectively and communicate one's opinions and ideas about the topics.

Completing assignments (preparation for the class, including reading the text, answering questions and listening to a recording) before each class meeting is essential. Students are expected to spend at least an hour per week preparing for and reviewing each class.

Grading criteria: active class participation, assignments and quizzes (70%), final examination (30%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per semester are allowed.
