Outline (in English)
(Course Outline)
This course introduces various cultural and social issues of the English speaking world. The course will encourage students to consider their own culture and society within an international context, and obtain new perspectives about current issues. Students are encouraged to critically analyze newspaper articles. Internet sources, broadcast media, and magazines will be reviewed during the Autumn Semester.
Through the course, students will develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
(Learning Objectives)
Students will be able to:
- watch English news program and understand the main points
- understand the characteristics of English news media
- logically express their opinion about an issue in English
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students are expected to make a short note on a passage for the next class. The preparation and review for the class will take about 1-2 hours every week. Detailed information will be given during the first lesson.

Grading will be decided based on:
- Quizzes, weekly assignments, participation (30%)
- Final Exam (70%)

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業では、１年次に習得した四技能の英語運用能力を用いて、国際語としての英語を通じて世界の多様な文化を理解し、批判的に分析したうえで、英語で意見を発信する能力を養います。秋学期は、春学期に学んだ内容に基づいて、英語系メディアについて広く学びます。無意識に持っている偏見（bias）や偽ニュース（Fake news）についても考え、ものごとに対する批判的な思考力を養うことを目指します。
到達目標Goal
１．ニュース番組形式の短い英語の映像を見て、内容を理解することができる
２．英語系のニュースメディアについて、それぞれの特徴を理解する
３．英語で書かれた新聞記事を批判的に検討し、自分の意見や考えを英語で論理的に伝えられるようになる

この授業は、英字新聞の特徴や読み方を学びます。また、英字新聞の記事を題材に、現代社会のさまざまなトピックについて考えていきます。

- 平常点（小テスト、課題、授業への参加態度など） 30%
- 学期末課題 70%
原則として、4回以上欠席すると単位の修得が認められません。
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
昨年度は、英字新聞に加えて、映画などジャーナリズムやメディアに関するテキストを広く取りあげたことが好評でした。また、授業中の課題についてグループやペアで取り組むため、自分と違う意見を知ることで学びの幅が広がったという声もありました。
