Outline (in English)
This course builds upon the skills and knowledge students gained in English 1 and English 2 and requires students to exercise all four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course explores different topics related to "Modern Society", from the perspectives of an international journalist. the course will compare Japanese society/lifestyle and other cultures.

This English 3 course builds upon the skills and knowledge students gained in English 1 and English 2. and requires students to exercise all four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course explores different topics related to "Modern Society", from the perspectives of an international journalist. the course will compare Japanese society/lifestyle and other cultures. There are three major themes of the course which are inter-related:
1) The importance of food in cultures
2) Meeting people from different cultures
3) Living in different cities
到達目標Goal
Students will enhance their English reading skills and critical thinking through reading and discussing various articles and will deepen their understanding of different cultures in the process. Students will improve their communication ability by practicing voicing their opinions about important issues related to society and lifestyle.

The textbook for this subject will be supplemented by additional BBC News articles or TED Talks, that will require comprehension analysis. Students will be required to prepare questions for discussion in small (random) groups and present their group opinions to the class.

University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 2 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
There will be some short, simple, written homework assignments designed to test the students understanding of the ideas presented in the major themes of the course. Each homework assignment will be 10% of total course value.

The English Course "Discussion Book Two" Gary Ireland and Max Woolerton. Available from < store.theenglishcompany.jp >. Look in the カタログ and search for DB2. A CD is not required but you might like to practice. If you purchase a book second-hand, you will need to pay The English Company 890 yen to access The Study Centre.
