Through reading, listening and discussion, students will develop their English proficiency. They will practice effectively expressing their opinions, knowledge and experience both orally and in written form. Group work will require discussions and teamwork; group presentations will be made. The teacher reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus when necessary.

The purpose of this class is to further develop student’s English proficiency in this course and to provide participants with an active approach to increasing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Students receive feedback as follows on each assignment they submit; the teacher evaluates their work with a letter grade as well as written comments on their work and suggestions for any improvements needed.
The classes will be conducted in-person, on campus.
Group work will be aimed at facilitating discussions; group presentations are required. The teacher reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus when necessary.

Discuss what you did during your spring break.
The Convenience of Living in Japan article
Highlight etc. in class
Week 2[対面/face to face]：Peer editing
Discussion on article from week 1. Peer editing of above paragraph and group discussion of same.
Make groups for presentations based on theme list provided by instructor.
Week 3[対面/face to face]：Your choice
A. Select a short article related to Japan and the world; you must be prepared (highlighting, vocab work and opinion) before class.
Discuss in groups.

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)】
The typed paragraphs are to be completed before coming to class. Highlighting, vocabulary work along with opinion and or summaries of all the handouts provided in class are also required before coming to class. Late work without an official documented excuse will result in a lower grade.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

Group work & participation = 30% Paragraphs and essay = 35% Presentations = 35%
There are no tests in this class. Without a train delay slip students will be counted absent if more than 15 minutes late. Maximum of 3 absences. Speaking in English will result in higher participation points. Any form of plagiarism is unacceptable. Elaboration on this will be provided in class.
