Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This class is focus on the current situation and history of Okinawa, which still has many U.S. military bases, Japan's security policy, international relations with China and the Korean Peninsula, historical relationship with the Pacific islands, and the public sentiment against the construction of a new base in Henoko. Students can learn the process of Okinawa suffered the most severe damage in Japan during the Pacific War, killing one in four citizens of the prefecture, and remained under US administration until it returned to Japan in 1972. While the US strategy for Asia is changing, the US military base is being maintained under the intention of the Japanese government, and Okinawa continues to be burdened. Learning about Okinawa should also help us understand the modern history of Japan and its international relations with Asian countries.

【Learning Objectives】
Students will:
・Learn about the current situation in Okinawa, where US military bases in Japan are concentrated, and history up to the present after the Pacific War.
・Understand the process of forming Okinawan people's will against the construction of a new base in Henoko.
・Understand the actual situation of the Battle of Okinawa, the role that Okinawa played in the postwar relationship between Japan and the United States, and the situation that was at the mercy of the political speculation of the Japanese government.
・Deepen understanding of international relations with China and the Korean Peninsula, and the Asian strategy of the United States and Japan through the history and current situation of Okinawa.

The standard preparatory study / review time for this class is 2 hours each.

Submission of reaction paper, participation in active learning (50%)
Semester-end report (50%)
