Outline (in English)

・Course Outline: An introduction to the history of western drama. Acting frees the actor's body that is embedded in daily life and reveals the possibility for new body movement. This course will reconsider how human beings have explored the possibility of body movement. As well as straight play, we will also focus on ballet, another mode of theatrical performance. Although the histories of these two forms are usually described separately, this course will try to conceive the common elements, too.
・Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to
(1) analyze and describe the history of western drama and ballet, (2) examine the different movements of the human body and their social impact, (3) interpret the work of theatre or ballet critically and aesthetically.
・Learning activities outside of the classroom: see as many performances as possible. Spend more than four hours per week on this activity as well as preparing and reviewing the course content.
・Grading Criteria/Policy: Class participation 50%, Final paper 50%.
