Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In order to develop an advanced understanding of multilingual international communities and multicultural societies, students will be exposed to the basic knowledge and concepts of linguistics and will be able to objectively analyze how "language" can be viewed from the perspective of communication.
 Linguistics is a discipline that analyzes language and describes and explains the "mechanism of language. In this class, we will introduce the basic concepts necessary to objectively describe human language. In the process, we will also present various approaches to a single phenomenon and overview the major research methods used in modern linguistics. Through these approaches, we will introduce the structures and linguistic phenomena found in the world's languages and the basic concepts needed to explain them.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. To gain a general knowledge of human activity in language.
2. To understand that there are unexpected phenomena in the world's languages by focusing on the differences and similarities between the systems of Japanese and English.
3. To understand that language can be analyzed and studied from various angles through exposure to fields of linguistics that overlap with other disciplines, such as historical, comparative, and geographical linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, contrastive linguistics, and second acquisition theory.
4. To develop an awareness of the main research methods in modern linguistics.

Since the lecture content is limited to the basics, if there are any unclear points or questions, please ask questions or refer to the reference materials introduced at that time to ensure understanding.
 The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end examination: 50%, Assignments : 30%, in class contribution: 20%
