Outline (in English)

We will use Descartes’ Discours de la méthode to carry out a series of academic and philosophic studies: read philosophical texts, write about them, present them, and think further and deeper. The purpose of this course is to cultivate the basic ability to learn, think and write by oneself at university, and to practice what we have learned in Basic Seminar I.
Students are expected by the end of the course to read and understand by themselves Descartes’ text, to construct their arguments logically through readings, searchings and discussions, and to explain them clearly in their own words.
Before each class meeting, students are to read carefully the relevant text of the next class and to summarize what the text is arguing for. Group or individual in charge of presentation of the day is to prepare a resume to be distributed. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
Grade will be decided on the following proportion. In-class contribution: 35%, Presentation: 35%, Term-end examination or report: 30%.
