Outline (in English)
Course outline: In this course, students are mainly expected to improve their reading skill in English, paying attention to paragraph structure and comprehending practical English.
Learning objectives: The goals of this course are to acquire better reading skill by learning the logical structure of English and to develop an understanding of contemporary world through the language for the media.
Learning activities outside of classroom: Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the text. The required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Grading criteria / Policies: Final grade will be decided based on term-end examination（100％）
Absence guideline for ILAC English courses: In principle, no more than 3 absences will be permitted per semester for students to receive academic credit for the course.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本講義では、受講生の英文読解能力の向上を主たる目的とします。その際、論理構造に対する意識と実用的な英語についての理解に重点を置きます。
到達目標Goal
英文の論理構成を体得することによって、読解を円滑に進められる技術を身につけてゆきます。また、メディアで流通しているような実践的な英語に取り組むことを通じて、今般の社会においても通用しうる読解力を涵養してゆきます。

『Skills for Better Reading 構造で読む英文エッセイ〈中級編〉』と『English for Mass Communication 時事英語の総合演習 2022年度版』の二冊を教材として使用します。前者は英文に内在する論理構造のパターンを実感するため、後者は実社会で用いられている英語の文章についてより理解を深めるために、それぞれ精読してゆく予定です。授業に際しては一文ずつ受講生を指名し、口頭で訳出してもらったうえで、順次ポイントをおさえながら解説してゆきます。また、音読による即読即解の訓練も行いたいと思います。進度については授業中の演習を通じ、習熟度を確認しつつ適宜調整するつもりです。必要であれば追加の講読用教材もプリントの形で配布します。なお、質問等に対するフィードバックは授業中に随時行います。
