Outline (in English)
This course introduces a range of topics and discourse themes. Students taking this course are expected to improve their knowledge of a variety of topics, as well as related vocabulary, the ability to ask and answer questions, and their ability to discuss a variety of topics. Students will also watch a video for homework and discuss their answers.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
Instructors will teach this course using communicative English language pedagogy and classroom practices common in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at universities in English-speaking countries. So students are expected to advance all their language skills, however special emphasis will be placed on academic listening and speaking skills.
到達目標Goal
Building on what was studied in English Communication classes in the first and second-year, the goal of the course is to develop students' English language skills and academic abilities to interact successfully in an all English-speaking university environment. Students will work on expanding on their general knowledge of intercultural communication and the sociolinguistic communication skills used in an English-speaking academic context.

Various discourse themes related life and study in the English-speaking world will be explored in depth. Students will be expected to not only participate in classroom activities, but also find and analyze information from various forms of English media independently and complete weekly homework assignments. Special emphasis will be given to academic listening and speaking skills.

本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。
The standard preparatory study/review time for this class is one hour in total. Each class has a video assignment for homework and students are expected to discuss their answers in the following class. Students should read the following unit before each class and make a note of unknown words or expressions in a B-5 notebook. Specifically, the Instructor will check and followup on homework assignments in each class.

Students can log into the various media provided during class. Information will be provided in the first class.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
1) Class Participation: 50%. This means demonstrating involvement in asking and answering questions, participating in pair and group work, etc.
2) Mid-Term Test: 25%
3) End-of-Term Test: 25%
4) Attendance of 100% (15 sessions) is expected. Any unexplained absence without a legitimate reason will automatically disbar a student from the top grade.
5) Students please note: No more than 3 absences per term are allowed.

Each student should bring a B5 notebook, sharp pencil, and eraser, and have an electronic dictionary ready. The instructor will explain vocabulary upon request if another student does not know the answer. The use of smartphones is strictly prohibited.
