Outline (in English)

Course outline:
This course introduces physics hidden behind particulate matters and techniques for handling fine particles. The main topics include sedimentation, diffusion, advection, electrostatic/hydrodynamic/adhesive interactions, aggregation, deposition, wetting, coating, segregation and rheology. The physics related to colloidal assemblies such as permeability, consolidation and fracture are also explained.

Learning Objectives:
From this course, students will be able to explain the roles of colloidal particles in various practical issues from both microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic points of view.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

Grading Criteria /Policy:
40% from short reports and 60% from final report.
