Outline (in English)

In this course we will learn different sociological approaches to explore and analyze the "state" as a set of social institutions by examining the arguments of Max Weber, Charles Tilly, Norbert Elias, Michael Mann, Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens, Michael Foulcaut, and so on. The purpose of this course is to understand the formation of the state and its roles from theoretical and historical perspectives. Before and after each class meeting, students are expected to spend two hours to read the relevant parts of the text carefully and to submit a memorandum of comments and questions. The comments and questions will be discussed in the next class meeting. Grades will be based on the final examination (100%).
