Outline (in English)

Using anthropological theories and methodology, this class seeks to explore diversity, differences and similarities among humans. Its overall aim is to offer students an analytical toolkit for thinking about ourselves and “the others”. We will examine a wide range of case-studies around the globe, in an effort to gain comparative understanding of human cultures. At the same time, we will examine our own society and culture from a relativistic standpoint. Topics include gift exchange, ritual, marriage, kinship, ethnicity, global processes, gender and human/non-human relationships.
Before and after attending each class, students will be expected to spend four hours to acquire full understanding of the course content by reading related books and writing. Grading will be decided based on short reports and in-class contribution(40%), and term-end report(60%).
